child custody is awarded based on the welfare and best interests of the child, after a consideration of the following factors: (1) the circumstances of the parents and child; (2) the nature of the case; (3) which parent is most likely to allow frequent and continuing contact with the other parent; and (4) any acts of domestic violence. Joint or shared custody may be awarded if it is found to be in the best interests of the child. The sex of the parent is not a factor for decisions relating to child custody.
