WHAT ARE "ADVANCE DIRECTIVES" ABOUT?

An "Advance Directive" (also known as a "Living Will") is a document that you prepare in case you become unable to make decisions for yourself later in life due to a medical condition. Its purpose is to very clearly state how you want your doctors to proceed with important, and sometimes difficult, decisions about how much life-saving effort to exert. Whether you believe that all possible efforts should be made to prolong life, or that there is a point beyond which efforts should not be made, it is important for you, your family, and your doctors that you express your wishes beforehand. Sadly, as we see in news stories, even young people need to express their wishes before tragedy strikes, in order to ensure they get the health care they want.
