Marriage in Favorable Parliamentary Hands.
Three Canadian Parliament members leading the Justice Committee study of the country's Marriage laws are each on record endorsing Marriage as an exclusively male-female union. Though each have promised to keep an open mind in the upcoming discussions regarding Marriage, one of the MPs, John McKay, recently noted, "Marriage has got religious and historical and traditional meaning to it that transcends all kinds of other things. Have the people of the world been getting it wrong for the last two or three thousand years?"
The Justice Committee began holding public hearings on Marriage in Ottawa in December, and will reconvene in late January for further discussion of the four options faced by Parliament: to maintain Marriage as a male-female union; to redefine Marriage to include same-sex couples; to no longer legislate Marriage but leave it to private religious organizations; or to establish a civil registry recognizing same-sex couples without a Marriage ceremony. By April, the Committee is to have a report to the Canadian Justice Minister, who is considering a bill to legalize same-sex "Marriage." In July 2002, the Ontario Divisional Court (trial level court) gave the Justice Department two years to rewrite its Marriage laws to include same-sex "Marriage." .
