New York Mayor Bloomberg Opposes DP Benefits Pressure on Private Business. Mayor Mike Bloomberg of New York City has reversed his pre-election support for city legislation which would force private companies to provide domestic partnership benefits to employees if they want to do business with the city. Bloomberg previously voiced his support for the bill "as long as there is an [exemption] for religious institutions," but Bloomberg recently told a homosexual right's group that he opposes such legislation. "Trying to use the city's procurement dollars to advance social issues is just counterproductive . . . Companies will choose not to deal with the city if we try to dictate their employment policies. The results will be that all New York citizens become losers," Bloomberg said at the group's fundraising dinner. While it now appears Bloomberg would veto such legislation, he has a record of supporting pro-homosexual policies and has personally contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars to homosexual rights organizations and causes. Currently, San Francisco, Oakland, and Seattle have laws which require private businesses to give spousal benefits to unMarried Couples in order to do business with the city. A bill which would include "sexual orientation" as a protected class statewide is also unlikely to pass before the November elections. Governor Pataki told homosexual rights groups that he would do everything he could to get a vote on the 30-years-old bill before the elections, but many Republican state senators oppose the legislation, and the bill is unlikely to be a major factor in the November elections. Legislation including an individual's gender perception and "self image" are also pending in the New York Legislature.
